Rabbit-proofing

Bunny-proofing your home is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of your furry friend. Here are some valuable tips to help you create a rabbit-friendly environment:

  1. Secure Electrical Cords: Cover or hide electrical cords to prevent your bunny from chewing on them. Use cord covers or enclosures to keep them out of reach. Not only will they damage your electronics if they get ahold of the cords, but it’ll burn your buns mouths!

  2. Protect Furniture and Belongings: Use furniture covers or barriers to shield your valuable items and prevent rabbits from chewing or scratching them. Keep fragile objects out of their reach. They’re just like vegan cats.

  3. Safeguard Houseplants: Some plants can be toxic to rabbits, so make sure to remove or relocate any potentially harmful plants. Research rabbit-safe plants to provide them with a safe and enriching environment.

  4. Block Off Restricted Areas: Close doors or use gates to restrict access to rooms or areas that are not bunny-proofed. This helps prevent accidents and keeps your rabbit in a safe space.

  5. Secure Trash Cans: Use lids or keep trash cans in cabinets to prevent your rabbit from rummaging through and potentially ingesting harmful substances. We do have some bunnies that love to “dumpster dive,” so make sure they cannot access your trash cans.

  6. Store Cleaning Products Safely: Keep cleaning supplies and chemicals securely stored in cabinets that are inaccessible to your rabbit. These substances can be toxic and pose a danger to their health. When cleaning their enclosures, just use vinegar.

  7. Provide Safe Chew Toys: Offer a variety of safe chew toys and appropriate objects for your bunny to chew on, redirecting their natural chewing instincts away from household items. You can find tons of bunny safe enrichment here.

  8. Inspect and Remove Hazards: Regularly inspect your living space for small items, cords, or any other potential hazards that your bunny could ingest or get tangled in. Remove or secure these items promptly.

  9. Supervise Playtime: During free-roam sessions, closely supervise your rabbit to ensure their safety and intervene if they show interest in unsafe areas or items.

  10. No Candles, Room Sprays, or Incense: Candles, essential oils, and room sprays can be harmful to bunnies due to their sensitive respiratory systems. These scented products can irritate their lungs and potentially lead to respiratory distress, making it important to avoid their use in areas where bunnies reside.

By implementing these bunny-proofing measures, you can create a secure and stimulating environment for your rabbit, promoting their health and happiness.
