Stasis Protocol

Uh oh - your rabbit is doing some of the following:

1. Refusing all treats, pellets, hay, and wet greens

2. Hasn’t pooped

3. Is hunched over

4. Has cold ears

5. Is grinding their teeth in pain

6. Is acting lethargic

Your rabbit might have G.I. Stasis, which can quickly become deadly without intervention.

We suggest giving your rabbit a tummy massage, a couple of flavorless infant gas drops, then calling your vet. Occasionally blockages can present as stasis, so give your veterinarian a ring before syringe feeding critical care.

However, they most likely will recommend feeding critical care, so have it out and ready.

We suggest getting out a low heating pad that your rabbit can choose to lay on and warmup their body temperature.

Also, dump out their litterbox and provide clean litter. This way you can keep tabs on whether they’ve gone poop or not. If they’re pooping, it’s not full stasis.

Stasis is one of the deadliest things for bunnies and can happen fast. It’s part of the reason why rabbits are classified as exotic animals.

They constantly eat hay too keep their guts moving, so when they stop eating, their guts come to a grinding halt - stasis.

If you’re ever concerned that your rabbit is going into stasis, send us a message and we will help you find an available, rabbit savvy, veterinarian.
